The first Leadership Principle - Know yourself and seek self-improvement.

Deliberate Leadership

What is deliberate leadership?  Everyone is at their best when they are fed, warm, comfortable, and happy.  But I am most interested in how leaders and team members behave when things are at their worst.  This is why the military trains to be cold, wet, hungry and tired.

It goes beyond just simply pushing through the physical challenges and training our bodies.  We train in this manner so that our leadership becomes deliberate.  When we know how we are when we are cold, wet, hungry and tired… we gain a better understanding of who we are as leaders and as people.

It is easy to speak about being honorable and just when there is no threat not to be.  The first Leadership Principle is “Know yourself and seek self-improvement.”  There is a reason it is the first of the eleven principles.

There is no way to truly know ourselves until we are challenged physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.  If we successfully endure the suffering and hardship, we come out a better version of our “old-selves".  This is what develops an effective leader that can provide purpose, direction, and motivation to teams.  It is what truly inspires.

If done effectively, the results are exponential.  Failure is a key component in developing effective leaders.  I was challenged on many occasions.  I failed on many occasions.  It was uncomfortable and at times very demeaning and disheartening.  But those are the moments which profoundly impacted my growth and development.
